According to traditional Chinese medicine, the first fortnight of February is the time to cleanse the body of toxins accumulated during the winter and start a detox. This traditional detox is also present in Christian Lent or Muslim Ramadan.
A lot of people start detoxing around the 1st of January as part of their new year’s resolutions and after too many late Christmas parties, a lot of alcohol and even more rich food.
The liver is the major organ responsible for detoxification of the body.
The body ingests, metabolises, assimilates and eliminates different kinds of molecules. Metabolism is ensured mainly by the liver and elimination by the kidneys. These two emunctories, organs allowing the elimination of toxins, need special attention and must be properly maintained and supported to function at best.
The liver has several functions: metabolisation of molecules (including carbohydrates and lipids), the synthesis of blood proteins, the production of bile (stored in the gallbladder and essential for the digestion of fats) and the detoxification of the body. That is to say the transformation of toxins resulting from the degradation of our diet, the ingestion of alcohol and drug molecules.
When our body has slowed and accumulated fat, the liver needs to be relieved of all these surcharges. Daily stress, lack of physical activity, fatigue, certain drug treatments or certain environmental toxins can also slow down the normal processing of Liver and Kidneys. The other emunctories participate in this movement: intestines, lungs and skin. Signs of elimination can appear as significantly as nose constantly congested (apart from any ENT pathology), as pimples, or as dullness…
It indicates a need for cleansing, the body and the mind need to be relieved from binge drinking, binge eating and binge thinking.

Why using aromatherapy is so efficient?
Because unlike other active principles essential oils have two effects:
An Inherent effect
Volatile essential oils used in aromatherapy are extracted from plants or trees which have been used for centuries to heal health problems. These essential oils are even more powerful than these plants or trees because they are concentrated. They can be applied topically, aerosolised or used during massage. These oils can be absorbed through the skin or the olfactory system and work in the body as an active principle.
When we breathe, air first enters the nose and nasal passages. The smell is detected on the olfactory mucosa. It is at the level of the olfactory bulb that thousands of neurons involved transmit the message, converging towards a glomerulus – a kind of giant receptor. The olfactory receptor cells are the only neurons of the nervous system in direct relation with the external environment. All of these glomeruli, once activated, represent a sensory element taken up by another group of cells, the mitral cells. These transmit them to the higher centers of the brain for the treatment of information. These are receptors of the limbic system, the subconscious part of the brain, where memory and emotions are found. The organ targeted by the essential oil aroma is stimulated this way.
Essential oils are a pharmaceutical grade natural remedy with incredible power. Don’t overuse them, it will not improve your detox but respecting the recommended dosage will.
